Footage of Perseverance landing released.

NASA has released footage depicting the Perseverance rover landing on the surface of Mars. The video shows the last 3 minutes of the automated landing procedure of the new probe, including the deployment of the parachute, the ejection of the heatshield, the powered descent, and finally, the rover lowering on the Skycrane. In the upcoming years, the rover will explore Jezero Crater - a former lake, looking for signs of past life, collecting samples, and conducting experiments.

I think it's quite remarkable that we humans can send a robotic explorers to the surface of another planet, and then watch a video that it recorded millions of killometres away. For the rover's future, I am most excited about the MOXIE experiment that the rover will conduct, which involves extracting pure oxygen out of the Martian atmosphere. The success of this experiment is especially important, as oxygen is vital for Mars colonisation. Not only is it used for breathing but also manufacturing rocket fuel for the way home. I hope the mission helps provide data and samples which will eventually make sending humans to the Red Planet possible.

  1. Does this mean that Perseverance is actually supposed to come back to Earth with the samples?
