The Democratic Party vs The Republican Party
As I mentioned in my previous post, the American political stage is dominated by two parties - The Republican Party and The Democratic Party. Amongst both factions, there are people with slightly different ideas, but they can generally be categorized in the following way. The democrats are rather liberal on their social views and left-leaning economically. They favor active government involvement in society and support minimum wages, and increasing taxes for high-income individuals. Democrats support decreasing military funding and oppose the US's involvement in conflicts in the middle east. The party supports strict gun control and is sympathetic towards immigrants, LGBT rights as well as abortion rights. Republicans on the other hand are conservative and have right-wing economical beliefs. They technically support a small government and more personal freedom. They are in favor of tax cuts whenever possible and a flat tax rate for everyone no matter their income. The Republican Party supports a strong military and is very sensitive about the Second Amendment granting every adult American the right to protect themselves with a firearm. They are generally not in favor of LGBT and abortion rights and want a strong border.

Republicans haven't always been so radical about abortion, LGBT, etc. But since the 1980s they started to depend on the votes of evangelicals (fundamentalist Christians) and so their policy in these respects shifted to the right.
